ATM Card Security Tips
- Keep your ATM card, PIN and card information safe.
- Remember the PIN and avoid jotting it down.
- Cover the keypad when entering the PIN.
- Count the banknotes immediately after each cash withdrawal. Do not take away any banknotes at the cash dispenser or ATM card at the card insertion slot left behind by someone else. Let the banknote(s) or ATM card return to the ATM automatically.
- If you intend to withdraw cash from overseas ATMs, please check with the relevant network provider(s) (such as JETCO or UnionPay etc.) whether the intended overseas destination can support cash withdrawal using your ATM card. Also, you should activate the overseas ATM cash withdrawal function in advance and set the overseas ATM cash withdrawal limit and an activation period through the designated channels.

Strengthen and Protect Your PIN Fraudsters tend to go for the easiest options. They may search the internet and social media to locate target's personal identity information (e.g. date of birth, telephone number or other personal information) and exploit by trial-and-error with simply and commonly used passwords.
- Do not use easily accessible personal information numbers such as HKID number, telephone number or date of birth as PIN. Set a PIN that is different from the ones for other services.
- For security reasons, change your PIN regularly.
- Keep your PIN and card information private and never disclose them to anyone else including bank staff. The Bank will not ask for any sensitive personal information (including passwords) through phone calls or emails.
- Do not allow others to use your ATM card and PIN.
- Do not keep your ATM card and PIN together.

Potential Liabilities
- You must report to the Bank by 2828 8008 or in writing and to the Police as soon as reasonably practicable after you find any loss or theft of your ATM card, mobile device and / or PIN or disclosure of your PIN and / or any card information to any unauthorised person. Or else, you may have to be responsible for all transactions, costs and damages effected or caused by the use of the ATM card whether or not authorised by you.
- If you report the loss or theft of your ATM card, mobile device and / or PIN or unauthorised disclosure of your PIN and / or any card information as soon as reasonably practicable after you are aware of any of the said loss or unauthorised disclosure and had acted diligently and in good faith (including taking reasonable steps to safeguard the safety of your ATM card and mobile device and the secrecy of your PIN and card information and keep your PIN separately from your ATM card), your maximum liability shall not exceed HKD500.
- The limit of liability is confined to losses specifically related to your ATM card and in circumstances described above and does not cover cases involving fraud or gross negligence or when you have failed to inform the Bank as soon as reasonably practicable after having found that your ATM card, mobile device and / or PIN (as the case may be) has been lost or stolen or that there has been an unauthorized disclosure of your PIN and / or any card information when you are liable for all losses.
- You shall remain liable for any unauthorized transaction if:
- you have knowingly (whether or not voluntarily) permitted any other person to use your ATM card, PIN or mobile device; or
- you have acted fraudulently or with gross negligence in using or safeguarding your ATM card, PIN, or mobile device; your failure to follow any of the security measures recommended by us from time to time regarding the use or safekeeping of your ATM card, PIN or mobile device may be treated as your gross negligence.

Avoid ATM Traps Fraudsters may attach card readers to the card slots on an ATM, hide pinhole cameras near an ATM, loosen or remove the PIN shields to record your PIN and / or copy account information. They may also distract you when you enter your PIN and then swap your ATM card for a dummy card.
- Do not enter PIN when someone else is peeking at you.
- Cover the keypad when entering your PIN.
- Should you notice any suspicious devices at any ATM (such as micro-skimmers, pin-hole cameras and fake keypads) or any suspicious activity around you when performing an ATM transaction, cancel the transaction immediately and inform the Bank.
- Reject any offer of assistance from strangers when performing transactions.
Remember to check the transaction records provided by the Bank, e.g. monthly statement or security messages by either text message or another form of alert in a timely manner. If there is any change to your personal information or contact details, please update your bank records with us! Report to the bank immediately if in doubt of being scammed. |
